I did some research on Sanitizer as I had heard some debate over them. Obviously washing with soap and water for 20-30 seconds is the best option but sanitizing is next best! I did learn through my research that we are NOT using enough sanitizer!
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers — which don't require water — are an excellent alternative to soap and water. If you choose to use a commercially prepared hand sanitizer, make sure the product contains at least 60 percent alcohol. (Mayo Clinic) Also, avoid "scented" sanitizers as they tend to have lower levels of alcohol.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends using a generous amount of hand sanitizer. If your hands are dry within 20 seconds, you have not used enough.
If your hands are visibly dirty, sanitizers offer very little effect. If your hands are dirty you should wash with soap and water. Antimicrobial wipes or towelettes are another option, but you will want to follow with alcohol-based sanitizers.

I saw a show recently on the BBC where scientists compared bar soap, liquid soap and various hand sanitizers to see which worked best. They rubbed their hands with E-COLI!! and then tried the different products. AFter washing or sanitizing, the scientists rubbed their fingers on a petri dish and tried to grow bacteria. One of the hand sanitizers worked even better than soap and water. Interesting...
I did read too that sanitizers could be harmful too. Your body does need to come in contact with germs in order to build up resistance to build up your immunity. Otherwise, we are creating a super bug. Now myself, I don't use any sanitizing unless I am out of my house and need to use unquestionably clean places. Check out the farmers almanac. they recently had an article about it.
Girl you got me thinking about grocery carts... Ick.
